If you’re considering throwing out a saggy old sofa or chair, think again – it might be possible to transform it into a bespoke piece that you can still enjoy for years.

Emily Pritchard at Ryde Upholstery says she’s used to performing magical transformations on tired-looking pieces of furniture – and often the result is unrecognisable from what was brought in.

As well as using a totally different upholstery fabric, Emily and husband Aaron can also ring the changes by, for instance, swapping baggy loose covers for a more streamlined, tailored look, adding different feet, or enhancing the upholstery work with traditional studs.

They can also give a new lease of life to sunlight-faded wicker conservatory furniture, simply by replacing or re-covering cushions for a contemporary look.

Re-purposing furniture rather than throwing it out makes sense for financial as well as ecological reasons, says Emily.

“Some people think it’s cheaper to buy new than to re-upholster something, but in many cases you’d never be able to buy what you’ve already got for the cost of just re-covering it.

“And besides, if you love a sofa or chair, it’s nice to be able to preserve it”.
