An incredible 1,000 people signed up on the day for this year’s Walk the Wight, creating a last-minute boost that took the total of participants in the iconic charity event to over 8,000.

Mountbatten Chief Executive, Nigel Hartley described the support as “extraordinary” and said the stories of courage and determination were “humbling and inspirational.”

Among those taking part was Steve Wright, who has terminal cancer and is being supported by Mountbatten. Joined by family and friends, he stepped out of his wheelchair to walk across the Flat Walk finish line, to a huge round of applause.

Other groups and individuals took part in memory of loved ones, many donning fancy dress, and choosing sunflowers and superheroes as favourite themes.

The total raised for Walk the Wight will be announced later in the year, when all the sponsorship funds have been received by Mountbatten.
