Hedgehogs can travel 2km in a single night as they search for food and shelter, but sadly our garden fences and walls tend to limit their movement.

However, the addition of some small (13cm square) hedgehog highways through fences will allow hedgehogs into our gardens, and are a vital way to safeguard the future of the species.

If you are installing a new fence, please spare a thought for the hedgehog. In recent years The PTES (Peoples Trust for Endangered Species) has worked with householders, ecologists and developers to install hedgehog highways and raise awareness of their importance. www.ptes.org
