If you suffer from headaches, it may come as a relief to hear that chiropractic care can help. This is because the muscles, joints, ligaments and nerves located in your neck may be triggers for, or even cause, headaches through a phenomenon called referred pain.

According to Claire Heeley, MChiro, at Cowes Chiropractic Clinic, referred pain occurs when two sensory nerve fibres that receive information from different parts of the body have their signals cross over, and the brain thinks the pain is coming from a different area than where the signal originated from!

Indeed, the facet (neck) joints in your cervical spine receive sensory nerve fibres from the C3 to T3 nerve roots, which also innervate the skin around your head and shoulders.

Through the same mechanism, trigger points (commonly known as muscle ‘knots’) in your neck and shoulders make very good headache generators, especially if you feel a lot of tension in the muscles of your neck and shoulders.

If you regularly suffer from headaches, your chiropractor will do a thorough physical examination to determine whether your headache could be linked to a cervical spine disorder and provide effective treatment, prevention and relief.
